This was originally posted in "Theme Songs of Life," where I misread the rules and thought that you were supposed to post your own theme song - whoops! So I'll be putting this here. Feel free to comment, I'd love to see them!
In Memories A Boy Meets the Man - Taku Iwasaki
(You might listen to this as you read and change songs as you find them. You may want to finish the piece you're currently listening to however, before moving onto the next part.)
18 years ago, Shun was just a boy and yet he was out in the battlefield. The current Doijakage (Minato Uzumaki) had just fallen after splitting up the Juubi into 9 parts - Ichibi, Nibi, Sanbi, Yonbi, Gobi, Rokubi, Shichibi, Hachibi, and Kyuubi. Although the Kingdoms had worked together to defeat the beasts, and even though there was a short period of peace afterwards. War soon started again and boys were forced to become men, sent out to do the work of assassins and soldiers.
In this new war for Shainingu, Shun earned a name for himself, The Ghost of the South. His technique of Shukuchi, a secret technique created by use of the Swift Element (Jinton), a new element created by the combination of two unknown elements, which allowed him to move at speeds that made him a blur, he could even move so fast that he would appear invisible. The use of Shukuchi was what granted him the title of Ghost of the South, he would move through enemy camps, invisible, with incredibly high speeds and a wakizashi, killing anyone he spotted. Over a hundred, or perhaps hundreds have fallen to this technique.
His summoning contract with all birds made the sight of them a bad omen while in South territory. A flock of crows often signaled his approach, the birds would scout out enemy camps and report to Shun, revealing to him the location of each enemy soldier in the camp. In what sometimes could be less than a minute after the passing of the birds, the Ghost would come into the camp and there would be little to no chance to react. The last thing many of his victims saw was the flash of metal that was Shun's wakizashi.
It was all-out war back then and the Ghost was known to leave no survivors. It didn't matter to him whether they were children, women, or wounded men; they were all enemies to the South. It became superstition to never stay in one place in South territory for more than a night and to kill any birds if they were spotted, either that or to abandon the camp entirely. For the longest time no one knew the face of the Ghost and many thought of him to be the ghost of a long dead shinobi filled with hatred.
After years of fighting, an unsteady peace was created. Shun was made the Doijakage, in recognition of his efforts during the war and his skill. He had little choice in the matter of accepting the role, but he knew that for the moment, war was to be put aside and that he'd have to adopt a peaceful life for the betterment of all of the South Kingdom. He went into the job with a hard heart.
Sound of Snow Falling - Taku Iwasaki
Adjusting to the life of a Kage was not easy. For the first few days after he was appointed the title, his mind liked to believe that he was still in war and Shun often found himself jumping into action at the quietist of sounds. In those days, he was extremely distrustful of everyone around him. His attitude changed, however, when he was to look over a backlog of old and current reports. They were about Shinobi deaths in the war, murders; complaints of poor living conditions, that begged the Kage to do something; disappearances, suicides, crime, and so on. Even the once heartless killer had to step away for awhile to cope with the sometimes disturbing details in the reports.
After that day, he took a walk around the city; he wore a weapon at his side and an intense look on face, his mind once again believing that it wasn't safe. Everywhere he saw sad faces, even though there was "peace" there was no hope among the people, they depended on the Kage for that... but a man with so much blood on his hands found it hard to give them what they needed. He returned to his office where he dropped his sword, before going back to the street, with a smile on his face. He went from person to person and talked with them, helping them with whatever they needed help with. His only wish now was to restore the hope of the people and to make sure that none of their children had to live through a war like he did. He is kind to the people of his and other kingdoms, even those who have done wrong.
He seems like a friendly person on the outside, helping everyone like that. Those who know him, however, know that he lives a sad life. He is intensely lonely for one who surrounds himself with people. Only a few know of the nightmares he has of the war, about the people he has killed and the terrified looks on their faces as they fell, children especially. For this reason, those who know him know to be careful with their words. A single insensitive statement can send Shun's mind into the worst of flashbacks, however, even when these happen, he always comes back with that forced smile of his.
